A landmark since 1983

History

Designed by Patrick Stanigar, built by the UDC, and opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Our story

Built in 12 months, uniquely Jamaican.

The Jamaica Conference Centre was designed by architect Patrick Stanigar and constructed by the Urban Development Corporation in a record 12 months — completed in time to host the International Seabed Authority in 1983, winning the Governor General’s Award in the process. On 15 February 1983, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened its doors.

Built to the specifications and standards of the United Nations, the Centre is nonetheless uniquely Jamaican, using local material and craft to enhance its magnificent architecture.

Stonework

Masons from several parishes lived on-site for six months. Limestone quarried in St. Thomas was fashioned into a 6-inch veneer over the concrete walls.

Entry Tower

The glass roof is a sandwich of two clear sheets with a gold-coated layer between — strengthened to withstand 120 mph winds. Made in the USA by Libbey Owens Ford.

Jamaican Bricks

Bricks made in Jamaica by Clays of Jamaica, a community enterprise organization, ground the building firmly in its place.
